Life skills

Join us as we come together to learn, laugh and teach with each other and our dogs. Learn how to apply the principles of shamanic dog training to your daily life – making a deeper relationship with your beloved dog or puppy and teaching precious life skills that will make every day learning light and easy. By understanding and applying the wisdom of ayni (right relationship), munay (unconditional love) and killary (fluidity), you will bring a sense of sacred partnership to your time with your dog. By using the process of understanding, connecting and teaching, you will help bridge the gap between species, making dog-human communication sweet and free – like you don’t even need to work so hard to make sense to each other.

I will teach you these ideas, lessons, principles and theories with gentleness and laughter – knowing that they are the keys to a successful transition from control-based relationship with your dog to a consciousness/awareness partnership.

What is the difference? The difference mainly lies in the way things get accomplished. With traditional dog training methods like conditioning, obedience and dominance, there is a “you better get this right” or “you need to learn to do what you are told” sort of an exchange. No matter how positive it may be, conditioning and obedience still seeks to control and manipulate the other into shaped behaviour based on command-based language. The result is a dog who is forced to comply with commands and submit to control at any time, any moment, no matter what. The expectation becomes that your dog will automatically do whatever you want him to, no matter the situation, the context, his or her mood or state of mind. It is a dangerous combination of dominance and control that leaves a gap of separation between you and your dog that is difficult to cross.

With consciousness/awareness based partnership, we allow our dogs the time and space to make decisions based on information we provide, while making an effort to understand their point of view, what is important to them and what they need to make sense of the lives and behaviours and intentions of the humans they live with. As foreigners in a sea of humans, dogs are at our mercy as they seek to figure out how to fit in and where to place their trust, their focus and their efforts. By using understanding, connection and teaching, we help them develop the life skills they need to navigate daily lives with us quirky and awkward humans with as much peace and ease as possible – and with more freedom than they have had before.

There are 2 types of training: control-based and consciousness/awareness based. We will focus on the latter, with the understanding that – of course – we need to tell our dogs how to respond to many daily situations, events and moments as we support them through the day in our human world. The difference will be the way we describe, request and assist our dogs through it.

Traditional dog training advises us to refrain from too much chatting with our dogs, instead recommending that we use one-word commands and nothing else. As a contrast, in shamanic dog training, we are taught to converse directly with our dogs, not just believing that they respond only to our tone of voice and body language, but with the knowing that they will actually receive the direct and precise intention and message behind our words. It is a beautiful process, and each person who I support in making the shift is delighted and amazed at the way their dog responds to conversational direction and to our efforts in describing daily schedules and events to our dogs, as well as any changes or items of note that affect them and their families. I urge you to try it for a day – hopefully for a week. Speak to your dog as though you are confident he or she can absorb and understand everything you are telling her. See what happens.

As well, we will focus on teaching your dog the life skills he or she will need to navigate most situations that happen in regular life: come when called (including emergency recall), stay where you are told, don’t leave the house or yard or vehicle without permission, don’t pull on the leash, be polite with people and don’t touch my things and stay connected and responsive when off leash. These life skills serve to smooth over most of the needs you will have to help your dog achieve maximum freedom in his life with you. And to diminish the amount of command-based control we will have to force upon our dear furry friends. It is a joy to live in sacred partnership with our dog families, letting the momentum of love, freedom, play and laughter to take the currents of our lives – rather than the challenge of control, dominance, conditioning or obedience. The difference is huge, and the results are life-changing.

The main decision for you to make, when deciding if shamanic dog training is for you, is this: do I want to connect with my dog with the viewpoint that he or she is a living, breathing, changing, dynamic, emotionally and mentally intelligent being with real consciousness and awareness? Can I see myself making alterations to my life that include consideration for his or her needs, helping them find freedom within the confines of our dog-human relationship, and can I let go of my learned need to control and win with each interaction? If your answer is yes to any of these questions, shamanic dog training may be for you.

Our approach will be gentle (not to be confused with ineffective or weak) and sweet (not to be confused with fluffy). We will hold dearly the principles of ayni (right relationship), munay (unconditional love) and killary (fluidity) as we teach our dogs how to live and work in a human world – and how to find their own sanity and create their own meaning for their lives.

Puppy skills

(for pups 10-16 wks old and no aggression or behaviour problems)

Here we start the journey together, filling our days with laughter and joy, and many moments of frustration and worry (yes, I have been there too – it is equal parts fun and wonder with worry and frustration).

For puppy class, we will focus on creating a foundation of connection and teaching with your pup that will provide the platform to build your relationship and partnership upon as she or he ages and matures, being more able to absorb complex concepts of life with humans. Lessons and games will have an underlying thread of manners, recall, boundaries, co-operation, cognition and socializing.
